What are typical hair restoration prices in the US?

The table below gathers typical US hair restoration prices in one place. Use it as a reference menu, not a quote: prices vary by provider, city and your individual needs. Where evidence for a treatment is limited, we say so.

TreatmentTypical US priceHow it's charged
FUE hair transplantAbout $5–$8 per graftPer graft, one-off
FUT hair transplantAbout $3–$6 per graftPer graft, one-off
Small transplant (500–1,500 grafts)$4,000–$8,000Total procedure
Medium transplant (1,500–2,500 grafts)$8,000–$12,000Total procedure
Large transplant (2,500–4,000+ grafts)$12,000–$15,000+Total procedure
Beard or facial hair transplant$3,000–$7,000Per procedure
Eyebrow transplant$2,000–$4,000Per procedure
PRP injections$500–$1,500 per session3–4 monthly sessions, then every 4–6+ months
Minoxidil (generic)Low monthly costOngoing
Finasteride (generic, prescription)Low monthly cost plus doctor visitOngoing
Stem-cell or exosome treatmentOften thousands per sessionExperimental; not FDA-approved for hair loss

Medication prices depend on pharmacy, dose and whether you use generics, so check locally. Treatments like laser devices, scalp micropigmentation and hair systems are priced very differently between providers - ask for written quotes.

How should you read a hair restoration price list?

Clinic price lists and ads often look simpler than the real cost. Before comparing, check four things:

  1. The pricing unit. Per graft, per hair, per session, per area or per package? "Per hair" figures look lower than they are.
  2. "From" prices. A low starting price may apply only to the smallest case or highest tier.
  3. Session counts. A single PRP price means little if you need three or four sessions plus maintenance.
  4. What's bundled. Packages sometimes include products or treatments you wouldn't choose separately.

Which prices are one-off and which are ongoing?

This is where comparisons often go wrong. A transplant fee is mostly paid once, while medical and in-clinic treatments continue. Comparing a single transplant invoice with one PRP session makes PRP look cheap - but over several years the picture can reverse.

Why do prices differ so much between providers?

  • Who performs the treatment: a board-certified surgeon or dermatologist, a nurse, or a technician
  • Experience and demand: busy, established specialists charge more
  • Location: big metros such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago often sit toward the upper end
  • Technology: robotic FUE, special PRP kits or branded devices may add cost
  • Inclusions: follow-ups, medication and aftercare may or may not be included

Price differences don't always mean quality differences. Ask what the higher price buys for you.

What does a realistic combined plan cost?

Few people use just one item from the price list. Here are three common combinations, with rough first-year costs built from the typical US figures above. They are illustrations to help you budget, not recommendations - the right plan depends on your diagnosis.

  • Early thinning, medical approach: a dermatology visit plus a year of generic minoxidil and, if prescribed, finasteride. Often well under $1,000 in year one, continuing at a similar level each year.
  • Moderate loss, transplant plus medication: a 1,500–2,000-graft FUE procedure at $5–$8 per graft ($7,500–$16,000) plus a year of medication. Later years mainly cost the medication.
  • Thinning with in-clinic support: an initial course of 3–4 PRP sessions and one or two maintenance sessions ($2,000–$9,000) alongside medication. Later years depend on how often maintenance is needed.

Seeing costs this way makes it easier to compare a one-off procedure with an ongoing plan, and to decide what you can sustain. For a longer view over five years, read our guide to the cost for hair restoration.

Which prices should make you cautious?

Some pricing patterns deserve a closer look:

  • Transplant quotes far below the $3–$8 per-graft US range with no clear explanation
  • Large prepaid packages for experimental treatments, such as stem-cell or exosome therapies
  • Prices that are only valid if you book on the day of consultation
  • Graft counts that seem much higher than other surgeons recommend
  • "Guaranteed results" attached to any price - no reputable provider guarantees outcomes

See our problems hub for what can go wrong with rushed or poorly supervised treatment.

A useful habit is to ask any provider for its price in writing, with the number of sessions or grafts spelled out, before you agree to anything. Reputable clinics are used to this request and won't pressure you to decide on the spot.

How do international prices compare?

For context, hair transplant packages in Turkey often cost around $1,500–$3,500 all-inclusive, while UK and Western European clinics are around $6,000–$12,000. US prices are higher mainly because of labour, licensing, insurance and facility costs. Our Turkey vs USA guide compares total costs, including travel.

Does insurance cover any hair restoration prices?

Transplants and most cosmetic treatments are rarely covered. A consultation to diagnose the cause of hair loss - including blood tests or a biopsy - is more likely to involve insurance, especially through a dermatologist. Financing over 24–48 months is widely available for procedures; see our financing guide.
