Hair Transplant Cost Calculator

You can build a reliable hair transplant cost estimate in four steps: estimate your grafts, pick a per-graft rate for your technique, add extras, then work out any monthly payment. This hair transplant cost calculator method uses typical US figures - $3–$8 per graft, $4,000–$15,000 total - so you know what to expect before you get quotes.

How does this hair transplant cost calculator work?

Every hair transplant quote is built from the same basic formula:

Estimated grafts × per-graft rate + extras = total cost

Clinics use that logic whether they show it or not, so you can use it too. The steps below give you a realistic low and high estimate. It won't replace a surgeon's assessment - graft needs can only be confirmed in person - but it will tell you whether a quote is in the right ballpark and help you plan a budget.

Step 1: How many grafts will you need?

Start with the area you want to treat. The Norwood scale describes male pattern hair loss from stage 1 (no loss) to 7 (extensive loss). Use the table as a rough guide:

Area or stageRough graft rangeUse in calculator
Temples only / Norwood 2500–1,200Low 500, high 1,200
Hairline and front / Norwood 31,200–2,200Low 1,200, high 2,200
Front plus some crown / Norwood 3V–42,000–3,000Low 2,000, high 3,000
Front and mid-scalp / Norwood 53,000–4,000Low 3,000, high 4,000
Front, top and crown / Norwood 6–74,000–5,000+, often two sessionsLow 4,000, high 5,000

These ranges vary a lot with donor density, hair thickness and the density you want. For more detail, read how many grafts do I need. Women with diffuse thinning should get a diagnosis first, as graft planning is quite different.

Step 2: Which per-graft rate should you use?

Choose the rate band for the technique you're considering:

  • FUT (strip): use $3 for your low estimate and $6 for your high
  • FUE: use $5 low and $8 high
  • Not sure yet: use $3 low and $8 high to cover both
  • Beard or eyebrows: use the top of the FUE range, and expect minimum fees - or use flat typical costs of $3,000–$7,000 for beard and $2,000–$4,000 for eyebrows

If you live in a big, high-cost metro such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami or Chicago, lean toward the high end. Smaller markets may sit lower. Compare techniques in our types and options hub.

Step 3: What extras should you add?

Now add the costs that often sit outside the surgery quote:

ExtraTypical amount to addAdd if…
PRP sessions$500–$1,500 per sessionYour clinic recommends it alongside surgery
MedicationOften $20–$80 a monthYou'll use minoxidil or finasteride to protect native hair
Pre-op testsVaries; often modestNot included in your quote
Travel and hotelYour flights plus 1–3 nightsThe surgeon isn't local
Time off work3–7 days of lost earnings, if unpaidYou can't use paid leave

Step 4: What will it cost per month if you finance?

Insurance almost never covers a transplant, so many people use financing over 24–48 months. For a rough monthly figure at 0% interest, divide the total by the number of months. For an interest-bearing loan, the monthly figure will be higher - use your lender's quote for the true number.

  • $9,000 over 24 months at 0% ≈ $375 a month
  • $9,000 over 36 months at 0% ≈ $250 a month
  • $12,000 over 48 months at 0% ≈ $250 a month

Be careful with deferred-interest promotions: if the balance isn't cleared by the end of the promo period, interest may be charged back to the start. See our financing guide.

What do worked examples look like?

Example 1: receding hairline, FUE

1,500 grafts × $5–$8 = $7,500–$12,000. Add a year of medication (about $240–$960) and the first-year total is roughly $7,700–$13,000.

Example 2: front and mid-scalp, FUT

3,000 grafts × $3–$6 = $9,000–$18,000. Many clinics apply tiered pricing on cases this size, so real quotes often land lower than the top figure.

Example 3: patchy beard

A typical beard fill using flat figures: $3,000–$7,000, plus travel if you choose a facial specialist further away.

How do you get the most accurate graft input?

The graft estimate is the input that swings your result most - an error of 500 grafts can change the total by $2,500–$4,000. You can tighten it before any consultation:

  1. Photograph your scalp properly. Take front, top, crown, both sides and back views in bright, even light, with hair dry and pushed back from the hairline.
  2. Decide your priority area. Most surgeons rebuild the front first, because it frames the face. Estimating the crown separately stops the total ballooning.
  3. Be realistic about density. A transplant creates the look of fullness, not the original density of your teens. Planning for "natural coverage" rather than "thick" reduces the graft count.
  4. Factor in future loss. If you're under about 30 or your loss is still active, a surgeon may suggest a smaller first session and medication to stabilise the rest.

Once you have two or three professional graft estimates, rerun the calculation with those numbers. If they cluster together, you can budget with confidence.

Why might a real quote differ from your estimate?

  • The surgeon may recommend more or fewer grafts after examining your donor area
  • Tiered pricing or minimum fees change the effective per-graft rate
  • Some quotes bundle PRP, medication or follow-ups; others don't
  • Very large cases may be split into two sessions priced separately
  • Surgeon demand and local costs vary more than any table can capture

If a quote is far outside your calculated range, it isn't necessarily wrong - but ask the clinic to explain the graft count and rate. Our cost per graft guide explains common pricing models.

What's the next step after estimating?

Use your estimate as a benchmark, not a decision. The number that counts comes from a surgeon who has assessed your scalp. Request a free quote from vetted US providers and compare their figures against your calculation.
