What are the steps from first research to final result?
Most Dallas Fort Worth patients follow the same broad path, whether they choose a practice in Dallas, Fort Worth or one of the suburbs:
- Self-assessment: take clear photos of your hairline, temples and crown, and note how long you've been losing hair.
- Shortlist: identify two or three qualified providers and check their credentials.
- Consultations: get examined, discuss options and collect written plans.
- Decision and booking: compare quotes, arrange financing if needed and book a date.
- Preparation: pre-op instructions, medication review and time off work.
- Procedure day: a same-day outpatient session of about 4–8 hours.
- Recovery and growth: aftercare, shedding, regrowth and follow-up visits over 12 months or more.
Each step is covered below with practical DFW-specific points.
How long does the whole process take?
Allow more time than you think. Here's a realistic timeline for a transplant:
| Stage | Typical timing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Research and consultations | 2–6 weeks | Book consultations, gather quotes, verify credentials |
| Waiting for a surgery date | A few weeks to a few months | Start or continue medication if advised |
| Pre-op preparation | 1–2 weeks before | Follow instructions on alcohol, supplements and medications |
| Procedure day | 4–8 hours | Arrange a ride home; bring a button-up shirt |
| Early recovery | Days 1–10 | Gentle washing, sleep elevated, avoid exercise |
| Shedding phase | Weeks 2–4 | Don't panic - transplanted hairs shed normally |
| Regrowth begins | From about month 3 | Continue medication; take monthly photos |
| Visible change | Around month 6 | Follow-up visit at many clinics |
| Final result | About 12 months (up to 18 for the crown) | Final review; discuss any refinement |
If you have a wedding, job change or major event coming up, count backwards from it. Month 6 is the earliest most people feel comfortable with their appearance.
How should you build a shortlist of DFW providers?
The metroplex is large, so start by deciding how far you're willing to drive. You'll likely visit the clinic four or five times over the year, and a 90-minute cross-town trip on I-35E or I-635 at rush hour gets old quickly.
Then filter on qualifications, not advertising. Keep providers where the surgeon is board-certified in a relevant specialty, has a clean record on the Texas Medical Board's public licence lookup, performs hair transplants regularly and can show many results in patients like you. ISHRS membership is a useful extra signal. The choosing a provider hub has a full vetting checklist.
What should you bring to a consultation?
Preparation turns a sales conversation into a useful medical one. Bring:
- A list of current medications and supplements, including anything that thins the blood
- Any previous hair loss treatments, how long you used them and what happened
- Family history of hair loss on both sides
- Photos of your hair from a few years ago, if you have them
- Your questions written down, including who performs each stage and what the touch-up policy is
- A realistic budget figure, so the surgeon can plan within it or tell you honestly it isn't enough
Ask for the plan in writing: graft estimate, technique, treated areas, total price and what's included. Graft estimates are explained in how many grafts do I need.
How do you choose between two good quotes?
It's common to end up with two plans that both seem reasonable but differ on graft count or price. When that happens, don't simply pick the cheaper one or the one promising more grafts. Instead, compare:
- The reasoning: which surgeon explained why they chose that graft number and hairline position?
- Long-term planning: did they discuss future loss and how much donor hair to keep in reserve?
- Hands-on role: how much of the procedure does the surgeon personally perform?
- Aftercare: how many follow-ups are included, and who answers the phone on a weekend?
- Refinement policy: what happens, and what it costs, if growth is weaker than expected?
A difference of 500 grafts often reflects a genuine judgement call about density versus conserving donor hair. Ask each surgeon to explain the other's approach - how they respond is revealing.
How do you budget and pay for it?
DFW transplant prices generally fall inside the US range of about $4,000–$15,000, depending mostly on graft count and technique. Beyond the headline price, budget for:
- Pre-op blood work, if the clinic requires it
- Post-op medications and special shampoo
- Ongoing minoxidil or finasteride
- Optional PRP sessions
- Unpaid time off work - usually 3–7 days for desk jobs
- Hotel and flights if you're coming from outside the metroplex
Insurance almost never pays for hair restoration, but many clinics offer third-party financing over 24–48 months. Compare APRs carefully, especially on "0% promotional" plans that charge back-interest if not cleared in time. See our financing guide.
How do you prepare for procedure day?
Your clinic will give you specific instructions. Common ones include avoiding alcohol for a few days beforehand, stopping certain supplements such as fish oil or vitamin E if your doctor agrees, and not smoking around the procedure because it can affect healing.
On the day, eat breakfast, wear a shirt that doesn't pull over your head and plan for someone to drive you home - especially if you're given oral sedation. If you're flying in through DFW or Love Field, book a hotel near the clinic for at least the night of surgery and, ideally, the next day for a check-up and first wash.
What does aftercare look like in the DFW climate?
North Texas summers are hot and sunny, and that matters for healing grafts. Keep your scalp out of direct sun for the first few weeks, using a loose hat only when your surgeon allows it. Avoid heavy sweating, pools and hot tubs until you're cleared, commonly 10–14 days for exercise and longer for swimming.
Many patients choose autumn or winter surgery to make that easier, and to be further along in the growth cycle by the following summer. Full aftercare steps are in our maintenance and aftercare hub.
What's the best next step?
If you've read this far, you're ready for consultations. Collect at least two written plans and compare them line by line. To get started, request a free quote and we'll connect you with vetted providers in the Dallas Fort Worth area.

Frequently asked
It's strongly recommended, and required by many clinics if you've had oral sedation. Even without sedation, you'll be tired after 4–8 hours in the chair and your scalp may be bandaged or tender.
Many patients prefer autumn or winter because it's easier to avoid sun, heat and heavy sweating during early healing. That said, a transplant can be done safely year-round if you follow sun and exercise precautions.
Often a next-day check, a visit around week one or two, then reviews around months 6 and 12. The schedule varies by clinic, and some offer remote photo check-ins for patients who live further away.
Usually not in the first few days, since pressure and friction can dislodge grafts. Many surgeons allow a loose, clean hat after about a week. Follow your own surgeon's timing.
Most surgeons don't ask patients to stop finasteride, and many recommend continuing it to protect native hair. Always check with your own surgeon, as medication instructions vary.
Many patients fly within one to two days, once they've had a check-up. Take care not to knock the grafts on overhead bins and wear a loose hat only if your surgeon permits.
